Approaching the end of a longfic
Apr. 9th, 2022 09:35 amThe end is in sight... I'm at 68k and 22 chapters so far, and there's probably only two chapters left to write, maybe an epilogue as well depending on how it goes while writing. I'm partway through the supposed second-to-last chapter, words flowing enough that I think it'll stay on track.
68k in and the main couple hasn't even kissed yet.... #slowburn baby. This is the FE3H Hilda/Marianne camp counselor AU (with a werewolf involved), and although my goal was originally just to make the two girls blush a lot, I ended up taking a lot of tangents for the rest of the Golden Deer and to build up a somewhat action-y/mystery portion. I'm a little scared because action is not my forte... but I think it'll be good for me! And part of my goal with the action is to heighten the stakes of an emotional relationship-based climax, and I love writing relationships.
I love longfics for their spacious development, the ability to keep going in a particular world/story, and of course for the returning readers who come back and react to the chapters as they come out (my most beloved of commenters <3 <3 <3)... but there always comes a time with them that I feel "Yeah this does need to end." This fic has been on-again/off-again about how much energy I have for it, I've been ebbing and flowing like crazy (usually bouts of writer's block solved by long showers). Especially now that I'm getting really involved with a lot of BNHA events with deadlines, sometimes when I sit down to write for this I'm like "Aaa I need to get the chapter out on schedule, but there's this OTHER schedule I'm keeping track of..."
AKA I love it, but once it's done that will be one more thing off my plate per week, which will be a relief with my plate rapidly filling up. I ended up starting to release another BNHA longfic recently (TogaChako) which currently has my brain in a chokehold, so it'll also be a relief to focus on that as the only fic actively publishing chapters. (Though there's lots of side projects from the various events/exchanges I'm writing for ahaha, but they're a little different).
