Idk what happened to my body... But ever since last summer, my body sets me to bed at a reasonable time, and I wake up bright and early with rare exceptions. I haven't set an alarm on my phone in months.

For literally my entire childhood, all of highschool, college, and some time right after college, I had chronic insomnia. I would lie down, in the dark, and just lie there for 1-3 hours until I fell asleep. It was kind of a serious issue in highschool especially, since sometimes I would skip classes to sleep in (and by 'sometimes' I mean 'weekly'. Hey, I still kept up with the classes so...). I tried melatonin at some point, and even though it sort of helped me fall asleep, it gave me weird dreams and made me groggier and struggle even more to wake up in the morning, so not a solution to my core issue. I was a total night owl.

But since this summer, I've just been... Going to sleep? Like I get sleepy around 10:30pm nowadays. I lie down, and on occasion I have those insomniatic nights, but more often than not I'm asleep within an hour... and sometimes I even experience such sleepiness that I'm like "I'll get up to brush my teeth in a minute... just let me rest my eyes for a moment..." (spoiler alert: I fall asleep and wake up with a gross mouth). And not just on rare occasions either, but multiple times a month I'll be that sleepy! Prior to that, I think such sleepiness happened less than once a year!

It's probably a combination of factors. It really struck around the time I moved out of my childhood home, so the new location and change of pace probably did something (though it's not like it disappeared during college when I was living in the dorms). I guess the morning sunlight helps (and I did experience some grogginess/shifting with winter and daylight savings), but I still got sunlight in my old living spacees. Perhaps it's also just the way I'm aging? I feel like my boss at my old job, who used to get up at 6am every morning and start sending her emails. I used to think she was crazy, but now I'm like "Yeah it'd be nice to start work at 6am with a cuppa tea, and then end it around 3:30pm and still have plenty of daylight left to noodle around."

Whatever the reason, I'm loving being a morning person! It's just such a nice change from what I used to be, and I love being able to spend leisure time in the morning before work.

I definitely feel like my sleeping pattern adjusts itself on its own at different stages of life. I've been enjoying the early waking up too for the last couple of years, although I use that as quiet time for personal projects like writing rather than work, haha! (I wouldn't be able to finish my day earlier so it'd just be overtime.) Enjoy it while it lasts :D Waking up without an alarm clock feels so so good.

Through most of my 20s I was a night owl and struggled to wake up in the mornings, which I handled by having work schedules where I came in late and left late, and having a social circle of people who stayed out all night.

For me it started shifting when I became a parent. I was never good at getting myself to school on time, but being responsible for getting my own kid to school on time gradually molded me into someone who could actually wake up early enough to do that. My natural wake-up time has drifted earlier and earlier over the years, and now I normally wake up around 7, which I really enjoy, especially in the winter when it means I get to see a lot more daylight!

As I write this comment, it's 10:30 on a Saturday morning, and I've been up for hours while my partner and kid are still fast asleep. The quiet time really is nice.

Sleep is one of those very mysterious things for something most of us do at least some of the time. :D

I do think it varies with age, environment, work, dietary changes, hormone shifts, etc.

I think I sleep better when the daylight hours conform to the hours I need to be awake. Maybe those hours are earlier as we age. Sometimes, I wish I were still a teenager capable of sleeping till 10 or 11 or even noon! That feels so decadent to me now.
